Dolly Parton has a
new video for the title track to her latest CD, "Backwoods Barbie." The
clip, mixes images of a young Dolly in the East Tennessee hills dreaming
of a glamorous life as a star with shots of Parton in Hollywood. Dolly
notes the song, quote, "pretty much says it all." She explains, quote,
"It’s true that the way I look is just a country girl's idea of glamour.
I've always been a bit of a cartoon character, but that comes from an
honest place. I'm always getting too dolled up. My real name is Dolly,
so I'm just a backwoods Dolly asking for a chance." The song will also
be featured in the new stage adaptation of "9 to 5: The Musical," which
will open on Broadway on April 30th.
Willie Nelson is contributing to a new book about the late Ray Charles.
"Ray Charles: The Photographs Of Joe Adams," which covers a variety of
facets of both Charles' life and work.. All royalties from book sales
will go to The Ray Charles Robinson Foundation, an organization that
helps hearing impaired children.
Loretta
Lynn is re-recording many of her No. 1 hits for an upcoming album
produced by John Carter Cash, the son of Johnny Cash and June Carter
Cash. She is also working on an album of new material that could be in
stores by the spring. The new music may also feature members of her
family. Lynn's previous album, 2004's “Van Lear Rose,” earned two Grammy
awards.
Marty Stuart will re-release his photo history book, “Country Music: The
Masters” on November 11th 2008. The 342-page collection includes the
singer's personal photos of friends including Johnny Cash, Waylon
Jennings, Buck Owens, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Ray
Charles.
Vince Gill, Roseanne Cash, and Ricky Skaggs will be featured on an
upcoming album by jazz bassist Charlie Haden. "Oceans of Diamonds" is to
be released inhj October 2008.
Toby Keith and Willie Nelson will be a part of “A Colbert Christmas:
The Greatest Gift of All!” airing November 23rd on Comedy Central. A
DVD of the special will be released on Nov. 25, 2008 with proceeds benefiting
Feed America.

Patty
Loveless is set for a tour of theaters to promote her new album, “Sleepless
Nights,” to be released on September 9th 2008 by Saguaro Roads Records. The
tour, her first in three years, begins September 26th in State College, Pa.,
and initially includes 12 cities through early November. The shows include
performances October 1-2 at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va. “Sleepless
Nights” features her interpretations of classic country songs popularized by
George Jones, Ray Price, Hank Williams and Webb Pierce, among others.

Willie Nelson has written another book. “A Tale Out of Luck,” is co-written
with Mike Blakely, and is a classic western tale that brings to life
characters and themes central to any great Wild West novel — Texas Rangers,
cattle rustling, Indians warriors, women of ill repute, saloons, shootouts,
and more. It's the back story for his false-front western town, Luck, which
he built outside of Austin. Luck has been the location of several events and
productions including commercials and Willie's video with Toby Keith, “Beer
for My Horses.” “A Tale Out of Luck” will be available September 3rd.

Elvis Presley Christmas Duets - 2008

Martina McBride, Sara Evans and
LeAnn Rimes are part of a new Christmas album in which the ladies sing with
the late Elvis Presley. “Elvis Presley Christmas Duets” marks he first time
that any Presley duet album has been marketed. The duets are made possible
through the use of technology that permits the country stars to harmonize
with The King. Gretchen Wilson, Carrie Underwood, and Wynonna Judd are also
on the disc, along with Amy Grant, Anne Murray, and Little Big Town's Karen
Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman. The women cut their vocals in Studio B in
Nashville, the same place Presley’s original recordings were done. Songs on
the disc include “I'll Be Home For Christmas,” “Blue Christmas,” “Merry
Christmas Baby,” and “Silver Bells.” “Elvis Presley Christmas Duets” will be
in stores on October 14th

Glen Campbell
will perform at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, to help launch his CD, “Meet
Glen Campbell.” on August 19th -- the day "Meet Glen Campbell" hits stores.

Loretta Lynn has been in the studio with John Carter Cash, re-recording
some of her older hits. Loretta is also working on an album of new classics
with her sisters, Peggy Sue and Crystal Gayle.

- Time Life will
release the first set of recordings from Hank Williams' 1951 “Mother's Best”
radio show over the next three years, with the initial release set for this
fall.
- Rosanne Cash, Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs are featured
on an upcoming “Oceans of Diamond” album by jazz bassist, Charlie Haden, to
be released on September 23rd 2008 on Decca.
- Dolly Parton wrote the title track especially for
Jessica Simpson’s “Do You Know?” CD which is scheduled for September 9th
2008 release.
- George Strait‘s upcoming ten track “Classic Christmas”
CD will feature "We Three Kings," "Up on the Housetop," "Hark, The
Herald Angels Sing," "O Come, All Ye Faithful" and "We Wish You A Merry
Christmas." George says he wanted to put together a collection of
traditional Christmas songs he listened to when he grew up, and admits it
was hard to narrow the selection down to just ten cuts. "Classic Christmas"
will be in stores on October 7th 2008.

Marsalis are releasing
the album "Two Men with the Blues" featurering Marsalis and his quartet with
Nelson and his harmonica player, Mickey Raphael, recorded during a two-night
stand recorded last January in New York City.
- Ricky Skaggs and
Doc Watson will be the subject of the Sugar
Hill Records' Americana Master Series with new compilation albums.
Watson's releases span from 1960 through 2006. Selections on the collection
include solo work, as well as duets with Marty Stuart, Bryan Sutton and son
Merle Watson. Skaggs' collection includes early recordings like "I'll Stay
Around" and "Little Cabin Home on the Hill."
- Dobro master Jerry Douglas will perform four
nights at
the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Ford Theater as their 2008
artist-in-residence. The shows are set for Aug. 19 and 27 and Sept. 16 and
30. Douglas' 12th solo album, “Glide,” will be released on Aug.
19th 2008.

and Dolly’s duet on “Rockin’ Years” is in his
new “GEORGE JONES - BURN YOUR PLAYHOUSE DOWN” album, to be released on
Bandit Records in August 2008.
- Ricky Skaggs has
recorded bluegrass versions
- of his best-known country hits for “The High Notes,”
a new album to be sold exclusively at Cracker Barrel Country Stores. The 12
tracks on The High Notes include 10 of the No. 1 hits he first recorded for
Epic Records.
Among the titles are "Crying My Heart Out Over You," "Heartbroke,"
"Highway 40 Blues," "I Wouldn't Change You If I Could," "Cajun Moon" and
"Country Boy." The new CD will be available on July 1.
- “George Jones – Burn Your Playhouse Down” is a
new album of
duets of unreleased collaborations George made with a variety of stars over
the years. The oldest recording dates back to the mid-‘70s and features
George's ex-wife, the late Tammy Wynette. The most recent Jones' duet with
Tammy’s daughter, Georgette, which was recorded in 2007. Vince Gill, Ricky
Skaggs, Marty Stuart, Mark Chesnutt, and Dolly Parton are also on the
project. “George Jones – Burn Your Playhouse Down” is scheduled for release
on August 19th 2008.
- Patty Loveless and Marty Stuart are featured on the
upcoming album “Moneyland,” which is scheduled for a July 8th 2008 release.
Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, and the Del McCoury Band are
also on the disc. “Moneyland” presents a look at today’s economic injustice
through a selection of six new songs and eight classics including “We’ll
Never Leave Harlin Alive,” “Mama’s Hungry Eyes,” and “Breadline Blues.”

Willie Nelson’s new five-CD box set begins and ends with his song “When I’ve
Sang My Last Hillbilly Song.” It was one of the first songs he ever wrote
and recorded back in 1954. Nelson recorded it again in 2007. “One Hell of a
Ride” includes 100 of Willie’s favorite tunes, and is a virtual history of
recording over the past five decades, spanning the various technologies of
the studios and the different phases that Nelson’s music went through.

Remember Buck Owens

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then inspiration is the
highest form of creativity. Both elements come to play in two recent albums
that achieve their excellence through celebrating the late County Music Hall
of Fame member Buck Owens .
On Dwight Sings Buck, released by New West Records, Dwight Yoakam, a
longtime Owens friend and collaborator, offers 15 songs that include such
classics as "Act Naturally," "Together Again" and "My Heart Skips a Beat."
And Palo Duro Records has issued Under the Influence of Buck by The
Derailers, the Austin-based band forged on its founders' appreciation for
Owens. "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail," "Cryin' Time" and "Love's Gonna Live
Here" are among the 13 tracks featured on that album.
The son of a Texas sharecropper, Owens was the most prominent proponent of
the "Bakersfield Sound," whose crisply picked Fender guitars, honky-tonk
beat and rugged but tuneful vocals were transported from California's
Central Valley to the world in large part by the success of Buck Owens and
his Buckaroos.
On Yoakam's second album, Hillbilly Deluxe, released on Warner Bros./Reprise
Records in 1987, he honored that sound with the single "Little Ways." "It
started with a very deliberate reference to Buck in the phrasing of the
opening line when I pushed the time," he said. "I had dedicated the song to
him and he was aware of that. The label knew I was playing the Kern County
Fair, and Warner Bros. set up a meeting at Buck's radio station. We hit it
off, and he agreed to come out to see us at the fair. We got him to get up
onstage with us. That was the first time he had done that in a long, long
time."
Before long Yoakam and Owens recorded a hit duet, "The Streets of
Bakersfield," which helped establish a friendship that lasted until Owens'
death on March 25, 2006 - just four days after the two had shared a
four-hour phone conversation. "He was talking about writing his memoirs,"
Yoakam recalled. "He was also talking about wanting to do more bronze
statues for the Crystal Palace [Owens' concert venue in Bakersfield]. He
literally was talking the future, for the most part. I could never imagine
four days later he would not be here."
Up to that point, out of respect, Yoakam had never played his mentor's
songs, except when playing "Streets of Bakersfield" as an encore or backing
Owens onstage. "After he died, we were in Orlando, Fla., to perform," Yoakam
said. "And I said, 'We should probably do two or three songs in memory of
Buck for a couple of weeks.' For my audience and those members of my
audience that were fans of Buck's, we allowed them the opportunity to say
goodbye with us."
Those performances led toward recording Dwight Sings Buck. "The band and I
were in a rehearsal studio," Yoakam said. "We would begin each song by
hearing Buck's original arrangements, and then I would listen to a work tape
that we had of what we just did and think through ideas, variations and
things. The most distinct arrangement is probably 'Only You.' I hope I
captured an underlying spirit in what that song was. And, of course, the
first single, 'Close Up the Honky Tonks,' is a very distinct arrangement.
This album was a happy experience, every moment of doing this record."
Yoakam and New West Records will donate a portion of the proceeds from
Dwight Sings Buck to the Buck Owens American Music Foundation, a charity
dedicated to preserving the Bakersfield Sound and the legacy of Owens.
That legacy impacted, among many other artists, The Beatles, whose cover of
"Act Naturally" caught the young Brian Hofeldt's attention. "I was about 7
years old," the future Derailers singer and lead guitarist remembered. "I'd
sit down at the piano and try to bang out 'Act Naturally,' and my folks
said, 'You know, that's actually a Buck Owens song.' And I went, 'Buck
Owens? The guy from "Hee Haw"?' I didn't know, but I thought if The Beatles
liked him, I'm going to listen to as much as I can. Buck Owens really stuck
with me. I just loved his delivery and his songs. That guitar sound was just
so stunning and sparkling and clear. It really spoke to me."
The Derailers met Owens in 1995. "Our friend Casper Rawls had a Buck Owens
birthday bash every year in Austin at the Continental Club," Hofeldt
related. "In 1995, he finally talked Buck into coming down to visit. Buck
stood back in the corner, and when we got up onstage to do our Buck songs in
the show, he came up and stood right in front of us. He was visibly touched
because we had paid such direct homage to his music and even [by] the way we
dressed and presented ourselves."
Four years later, Owens invited The Derailers to be the house band for his
70th birthday bash at the Crystal Palace. The back cover of Under the
Influence of Buck shows him standing in front of the stage that night,
watching The Derailers and smiling. Later he joined them in the studio to
record "Play Me the Waltz of the Angels," which appears on their 1999 album
Full Western Dress.
Remembering that session, Hofeldt recalled Owens telling them, "'It's
interesting you guys picked this song to involve me with. I'd actually
played guitar on the original Wynn Stewart version.' It was a real
full-circle thing for him. Of course, it was just an amazing, wonderful
experience for us to be involved in a recording with Buck Owens. I can't say
enough nice things about how supportive he was to us over the years."
In recording Under the Influence of Buck, Hofeldt said, "we did adhere
pretty close to the arrangements that Buck and his Buckaroos and Ken Nelson,
Buck's producer, laid out for those songs. For so many years, we've been
playing those songs like that, and another thing is that the sound is so
specific and so unique and such a part of what we've taken as a part of our
sound that we really wanted to, in tribute to Buck, play that sound the way
it was. We felt we were approaching what we were doing in a way that Buck
would be proud of. We had him on our minds the whole time."
Both Yoakam and Hofeldt have benefited from their friend's advice. "One
thing I really remember is he said, 'Don't be afraid to entertain the idea
of doing an outside song from another songwriter,'" Hofeldt recalled. "He
said, 'I have my own publishing company and I'm doing well with it. I wrote
most of my own songs. But I never would have gotten my first No. 1 if I
hadn't gotten "Act Naturally,"' which was written by Johnny Russell and Voni
Morrison.
As for Yoakam, the most valuable lesson imparted by Owens was "to cherish
the opportunity that I've had to make a living performing music. Watching
him enjoy what he was doing to the very end of his life, that makes it a
great lesson."
Owens actually performed at the Crystal Palace on the night he died. Shortly
after ending his show, he encountered some late arrivals who had just made
it down from Oregon and without hesitation went back to sing some more for
them. "He played a short set and ended with 'Big in Vegas,'" Hofeldt said,
noting the song that closes The Derailers tribute album. "That was the last
song that Buck ever performed. To the end, he was the ultimate entertainer."

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has been in the studio with producer George
Massenburg. Singer-songwriter Jon Randall is co-producing the new project.
The Dirt Band will hit the road with close friends Poco and that band’s
founder, Jim Messina, in 2008. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band celebrated its
40th anniversary this year.

- Ronnie Milsap says he has been gathering
new material and plans to start recording a new album early next year.
Ronnie says he’s been playing songs around the house to see how they feel
and that the next step will be to go in studio with the band to demo the new
material. Milsap says the new project has not yet been named.

Two country compilations will be released on January 8th as part of the
Ultimate Grammy Collection CD series. The contemporary country CD will
feature Vince Gill, Mary Chapin Carpenter and the Judds, as well as George
Jones' "Choices" and June Carter Cash's "Keep on the Sunny Side." The
classic country CD will offer songs by Roger Miller, Tammy Wynette and
Johnny Cash.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has been in Nashville recording new material with
producer Jon Randall. Band member John McEuen, who plays banjo, mandolin and
guitar, says they're working on a few old songs and finding some new tunes
as well.

Willie Nelson says it's about time his sister, Bobbie, made her solo
recording debut. Bobbie's album "Audiobiography," is a collection of 12 of
her favorite songs. Willie is featured on two of the cuts, and he also plays
guitar on the album. In turn, Bobbie performs some of her songs in a segment
during Willie's live shows.

Merle Haggard’s “The Bluegrass Sessions” racked up his highest first-week
sales for a new release since 2000. Hag’s first bluegrass album features a
duet with Alison Krauss on his classic “Mama’s Hungry Eyes.”

Dolly
Parton's new single "Better Get To Livin"' is available exclusively for
download on iTunes and will be shipped to country radio stations on
September 28th. It's the first single from "Backwoods Barbie,” which should
be available early next year. "Better Get To Livin"' is also one of the
songs from the forthcoming Broadway musical "9 to 5 The Musical," for which
Dolly wrote all the words and music. It's expected to open in New York City
in the Spring of 2009.

- The two-disc DVD set, "The Best of
the Johnny Cash TV Show” features 66 performances from the series, which ran
from June 1969 through March 1971. George Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Merle

Elvis
Presley is logging yet another chart-topper in the UK. The two-disc
collection "The King," which was issued overseas in conjunction with the
30th anniversary of his death, is debuting at number one on the British
album chart. But the reissue of Presley's 1968 hit "Suspicious Minds" didn't
fare quite as well on the singles chart, entering the list at number eleven.
However, the song was just rereleased on the exact date -- 30 years to the
day that Presley passed away -- and only three days of sales could be
considered for the tally, so the track could still climb the chart. "The
King" is Presley's eleventh album to reach number one on the British chart,
and arrives on the list nearly 51 years after his first UK album
chart-topper, "Rock 'n' Roll," captured the number one spot in November
1956.

Time Life
is developing a series titled “Legends of the Opry” and Porter Wagoner will
be the first artist to be featured. Material for the series is coming from
live performances from Grand Ole Opry shows. “Legends of the Grand Ole Opry:
Porter Wagoner Sings His Hits” will include songs spanning 1963 through
1967. It's the first time these live performances have ever been issued, and
the first live album from Porter in over 40 years. Later this year, Grand
Ole Opry performances by Willie Nelson and Marty Robbins will be available
as part of the new series. “Legends of the Grand Ole Opry: Porter Wagoner
Sings His Hits” will arrive in stores on September 25th.

A new video of Lisa Marie Presley singing "In the
Ghetto," accompanied by her late father, is going to be posted on the AOL
Internet site Spinner.com. It'll mark the 30th anniversary of her father's
death. Lisa Marie's voice was added to the original version of her father's
hit song from 1969. The video duet features Presley and images of her late
father.

Music by Brooks & Dunn, Travis Tritt, and Alabama are featured on the
soundtrack CD for “Dale,” the feature film that is the only authorized
biography of the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. Set for release August 28th as a
venture by CMT Films and NASCAR Images, the soundtrack CD will be sold
exclusively at all Wal-Mart stores and Walmart.com.

volumes of “The Best of the Flatt & Scruggs TV Show” will be released on
October 9th. These volumes -- the third and fourth in the series -- offer

Jennings’ “Never Say Die: The Final Concert Film” is a three disc DVD set of
his last concert at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, and features his wife
Jessie Colter, John Anderson, Montgomery Gentry and Travis Tritt. In
addition to the two-hour concert, the package includes rehearsal footage and
interviews with Waylon, Jessie, Bobby Bare, Kris Kristofferson, Willie
Nelson and others. The two audio CDs include the full-length concert as well
as eight previously unreleased songs.

album of Buck Owens songs, on July 31 on Palo Duro Records. The Austin-based
honky-tonk band was formed in the '90s after the musicians realized they
were all big fans of Owens. In turn, Owens invited the band to perform at
his 70th birthday party in Bakersfield, Calif., in 1999. Selections on the
13-track project include "Love's Gonna Live Here," "Together Again," "My
Heart Skips a Beat" and "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail.”

- With the out-of-the-box success of their debut
single, "I Loved Her First," Heartland seems to be one of those overnight
success stories. But it's not that simple. In reality the band worked for
years to develop the song and stagecraft that brought them to the attention of
veteran Music Row executive Mike Borchetta, who signed Heartland to his Lofton
Creek Records label. And with that leadoff song already established as a
bona-fide wedding standard, these guys are off to a great start.
The members of Heartland - guitarists Craig Anderson and Mike Myerson, bassist
Keith West, lead singer Jason Albert, fiddler Chuck Crawford and drummer Todd
Anderson - are Alabama-based in more ways than one, having been strongly
influenced from day one by a certain superstar Country band from their home
state. Back in1997 the band got their first shot at stardom performing at the
June Jam, Alabama's annual concert event in Fort Payne, Ala. For Heartland,
playing the June Jam was a defining moment.
Lately, Heartland has been busy on the road in support of their debut album, I
Loved Her First, which was produced by "I Loved Her First" co-writer Walt
Aldridge and released in October.

Nominations for the Americana Music Association's 2007 Honors and
Awards were announced today reflecting a year in which established artists
were nominated along side up and comers and women carried just as much
artistic weight as their male counterparts.
The event was held in the beautiful atrium of BMI Nashville during a special
reception for Association members. Artists and Industry executives of the
Americana World gathered to hear Singer/Songwriter Elizabeth Cook and Webb
Wilder announce the list of nominees.
The Avett Brothers received three nominations including Album of the Year, New
and Emerging Artist and Duo Group of the Year. Lucinda Williams and Patty
Griffin also received three nominations for Album of the Year, Artist of the
Year and Song of the Year.
"The nominations reflect the diversity and ever growing popularity of
Americana Music," says AMA Executive Director Jed Hilly. "Today's nominees are
responsible for some of the finest music being made and I am confident the
awards show in November will be a musical night to remember."
Chosen by members of the Americana Music Association eligibility is based on
work released during a 12 month time period from June 1, 2006 through May 31,

October 31st with a night of incredible music showcases at venues throughout
Nashville. From Thursday November 1st-Saturday November 3rd the AMA Conference
will feature daytime seminars, panels and activities at the Nashville
Convention Center. At night the festival features music showcases and parties
in area clubs.

Looking at Ronan Keating's career trajectory - from boy band heartthrob to
multi-Platinum selling solo artist - "Country" may not be the first word
that comes to mind. But a look (and a listen) below the surface of this
Irish-born singer's prodigious output reveals a serious and multi-faceted
artist who, through his songwriting and song choices and his massive popular
appeal, has emerged as a major international voice for Country Music.
"There's a great relationship between Irish music and Country Music, and I
grew up listening to Country," Keating said. "All the TV shows showed
American Country artists, and my parents loved the music, so I was engrossed
in it as a child and it just stuck with me. There is a part of my soul that
is Country Music, and that's why it comes out in what I do."
Keating was 14 years old and working in a Dublin shoe store when he beat out
300 auditioning hopefuls to become a member of Boyzone. The band, cast in
the mold of the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync, experienced phenomenal success
in the '90s. Each of their four albums shot to the top of the UK charts, and
they landed all of their 16 singles in the Top 3. While Boyzone occasionally
hinted at Country, covering songs such as Anne Murray's "You Needed Me," for
example, Keating's stylistic leanings became clear from his first solo
single in 1999, a cover of the Keith Whitley and Alison Krauss classic,
"When You Say Nothing at All." His self-titled debut sold more than 4
million copies, establishing Keating as a star. In 2002, he released his
sophomore album, Destination, leading with "If Tomorrow Never Comes," a
chart-topping cover of the Garth Brooks smash from 1989.
"My version is not as Country as Garth's," Keating said. "Even 'When You Say
Nothing at All,' I turn it into more of a contemporary pop song. But those
roots are there, and you feel them. You don't have to be a Country fan to
appreciate those songs."
Through his carefully considered, artfully rendered covers, audiences from
London to Lisbon to Paris have come to appreciate the lyrical and melodic
virtues of contemporary Country Music, and his songwriting has even taught
America's Country artists a thing or two about what constitutes a hit. Back
in 2001, Keating pitched one of his compositions, "The Long Goodbye," to
Brooks & Dunn, who subsequently took the song to No. 1.
"That was a brilliant feeling," Keating said. "It was great for me as a
songwriter to be recognized in that part of the world."
If his stardom hasn't yet caught on in the U.S., Keating seems to have the
rest of the globe pretty well covered. "All Over Again," the first single
from his latest album was a duet with acclaimed British folksinger Kate
Rusby, and Keating recently recorded new versions of the song in Italian,
French, German, Portuguese and Chinese. Keating partnered with American
Country star LeAnn Rimes for another hit duet and video, 2004's "Last Thing
on My Mind."
"Ronan is one of my favorite people in the world," Rimes said. "He is such a
genuine, kind hearted man. I absolutely loved working with him. He has a
very smooth, passionate voice that makes you believe everything he sings."
With the video of their duet in heavy international rotation, Rimes was
invited to Switzerland to headline Country Night Gstaad Festival in 2004.
Keating joined her to perform their hit song and was invited back to
headline this year's event in September.

- Raul Malo Opens A New Musical Chapter With 'You're
Only Lonely'

For more than 15 years, Raul Malo fronted The Mavericks, a Country band that
garnered multiple awards - including CMA Awards for Vocal Group of the Year
in 1995 and 1996 - and enjoyed mainstream success in both the U.S. and
Europe. Their recipe, equal parts Roy Orbison and Hank Williams, tested the
boundaries of Country Music. Malo, the son of Cuban émigré parents, further
widened those boundaries with his 2001 Latin solo album, Today, and his work
with super group Los Super Seven in 2005. He also produced other artists,
including K.T. Oslin and Rick Trevino. One project that has long languished
on Malo's to-do list is what he described as a "singer's record," an album
that showcased its vocalist with songs of integrity, range and emotion.
"This is a record that I've always wanted to make, because I'm just a singer
on it," explained Malo of his new CD, You're Only Lonely, on Sanctuary
Records. "For me, as a vocalist, it's just paying tribute to some of my
favorite songwriters and artists. It was the first time in my life that I
had ever done that."
For inspiration, he didn't have to look any further than the Linda Ronstadt
albums in his collection.
"To me, those records are so special," he recalled. "They are an important
part of our music history. Linda covered a lot of people's material, because
she wasn't a writer, per se. But there was an enormous wealth of talent
around her, and all these songs were just tailor-made for her. Those records
were fantastic, not only hers, but James Taylor's and of course the J.D.
Souther stuff."
Enter legendary producer Peter Asher - the man at the helm of many of the
Ronstadt, Souther and Taylor albums that Malo held dear. Malo and Asher met
backstage last year in London at a Mavericks show, and the seeds of You're
Only Lonely were sown.
"I knew of The Mavericks records because in England they had a couple of
huge hits," Asher said. "So I knew who they were, and liked them. I loved
the show, went backstage and met Raul. We ended up having a long
conversation, and we talked about the possibility of working together at
some point."
As with Ronstadt, Asher saw in Malo an opportunity to record with a singer's
singer.
"Raul has an extraordinary voice," Asher praised. "It's one of those huge
voices that can do anything. So what we tried to do was pick his favorite
songs - songs that he enjoyed singing, in such a way that it would frame his
voice. It's a vocal-based album. We tried for the singer and the song to be
the center of attention, and the center of the arrangement, because his
voice is unlike anybody else's. It's so beautiful."
Asher points out similarities between Ronstadt and Malo. "They both have
quite amazing voices, but they also both have a very strong sense of what
songs will suit them," he said. "Each track was structured, arranged and
produced in such a way as best I could, to reflect the brilliance of her
singing - and in this case, his singing."
If the critics have their way, You're Only Lonely will be joining Ronstadt's
classic records at the top of the charts. Released on July 25, the album has
generated reams of critical praise. People magazine selected the album as
their "Critics Choice," describing the music as "intensely romantic." The
Los Angeles Times credited Malo with "resurrecting the kind of romantic pop
music that Frank Sinatra long personified." And the singer was recently
invited to appear on NPR's "All Things Considered."
The list of songs on You're Only Lonely runs the gamut of musical styles and
decades. Malo soars with classic standards including "Remember," "So Sad"
and "Games That Lovers Play;" knowingly interprets Willie Nelson's "Angel
Flying Too Close to the Ground;" puts a male perspective on the oft-covered
Etta James ode to romance, "At Last;" and makes the title cut - written by
Souther - his own. Nestled seamlessly among these and other classics is the
Malo-penned original, "For You," a joyous Latin-flavored composition.
"We listened to the original tracks as if they were demos being sent to us,
not as the hit records that they were," he revealed. "It was like we were in
the studio, and somebody sent us a demo and we'd just heard it. So we'd go,
'Okay, let's do this. Let's break it down and forget what orchestrations
there are on the record.' And that's how we went at it."
Martina McBride joins Malo on the Randy Newman ballad "Feels Like Home."
Malo jokes that he was able to get McBride's participation with "a lot of
begging. Martina's a friend. George Massenburg (who mixed and mastered
You're Only Lonely) had just finished working with her on something. We were
looking for a duet partner for that song, and it just seemed right. I
certainly knew she could sing it. It's difficult to get somebody on a
record, because everybody's so busy - and she's no exception. So it just
aligned. It was good timing, thankfully."
Malo toured last summer, introducing the songs on You're Only Lonely to U.S.
and Canadian audiences. "The reaction was great," he said. "People know
these songs, and are thrilled to hear them again in this context. I don't
think they've heard them in awhile, and they're such great songs. I'm
thrilled to be singing them."
But a Malo show isn't the only place you're likely to see him. Last year he
was the Musical Director for several CMT productions, including the
"Crossroads" episode that featured Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers and "100
Greatest Duets." "Honestly, I don't know how they came about - but I'm glad
they did," he said of the musical director jobs. "I think they felt
comfortable that there was an artist in the band to work with the singers.
"And I get to be a musician, which is fun for me, because I don't even read
charts," he added. "It's great. I get to stand there and pretend. I mean,
I've got them all there on my music stand, with a light. People go, 'Wow,
look at him - man, he's bad, he can read charts.' And I can't. But I pretend
like I do, and it's a lot of fun."
There's no pretending when it comes to Malo's voice. When asked how he feels
to have Peter Asher describing him one of the best singers in the world,
he's silent for a moment. "I mean, come on, what am I supposed to think
about that?" he said humbly. "That's amazing, with the singers that he's
worked with."

Few artists have created a more consistent soundtrack for the lives of
America's Country Music fans than Alabama . From working class anthems
including "Forty Hour Week (For A Livin')" to smoldering love songs such as
"Feels So Right" to the celebration of Southern life in "Dixieland Delight,"
Alabama's catalog of hits has reflected Country life and values.
Alabama's musical legacy is celebrated on Livin' Lovin' Rockin' Rollin,' a
three-CD box set that includes 51 songs, including eight previously
unreleased tracks. Among those tracks are live performances, alternate
versions of classic hits and an acoustic demo that lead singer Randy Owen
recorded in 1973. The set also features a 52-page booklet, which includes a
chronological timeline, rare photos, and liner notes written by Nashville
journalist/historian Robert K. Oermann .
One of Owen's favorite tracks on the album is a medley that features "That
Silver Haired Daddy of Mine," "Suppertime," "Teach Your Children" and "Don't
it Make You Want to Go Home," recorded at a Georgia music park in 1982.
"That was the only time in my memory that we sat down with acoustic guitars
and played those songs that way, and it was actually on tape," Owen said. "I
didn't want to mess with it. It was just pretty raw and to the point. Rather
than making a big production out of it, we did the best we could with it so
we didn't lose the authenticity of the moment. It was a unique find."
The box set also includes live performances of "My Home's in Alabama," "If
You're Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band),"
"Tennessee River," "Vacation" and "Gonna Have a Party," among others. Owen
is particularly pleased with the live tracks and the glimpse into Alabama's
history they provide.
"I wanted kids to hear what Alabama sounded like in concert," he said of
young fans that weren't around to hear the band in its heyday. "Some of
those tracks were taken straight out of the board."
Another rare track is a demo recorded by Owen in 1973. "Ripperly O'Tucke" is
based on a man in Owen's hometown.
"They told me they wanted to hear something that nobody had heard before,"
Owen said of the label's request for rare cuts. "So I went back and found
something I recorded a long time ago, just me and my guitar. It was about an
old guy I knew. He was a character. The word was - when I was a little kid -
that his wife left him. I remember people talking."
Livin' Lovin' Rockin' Rollin' spotlights the music that has made Alabama
more than the name of a Southern state. Owen, Jeff Cook, Teddy Gentry and
Mark Herndon have come a long way, traveling many roads from their Fort
Payne, Ala., home to their days as a Myrtle Beach, S.C., bar band to their
arena-filling years touring the country for more than two decades. Life on
the road came to an end for the band when they performed the last show of
their "American Farewell Tour" in Bismarck, N.D., on Oct. 16, 2004.
"We wanted to go out and do good shows, and we did that," Owen said. When
asked was it hard to walk off the stage that final time? "No, I was so ready
to," he admitted. "I didn't sleep until the next morning because I was so
excited to not have that load on my shoulders. I told myself, when I get
through this, I'm taking a year off. I don't care what kind of money is
offered, I'm not going to do anything."
Owen spent the year relaxing, enjoying his family and pursuing things he
never had time for during all those years on the road. Now, however, he's
ready to re-enter the music business at his own pace. "We never said we were
retired," he said.
In fact, he's been pretty busy writing and recording demos of new songs. He
recently recorded a tune with RCA newcomer Jake Owen and contributed a song
to the recently released She Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool: A Tribute
to Barbara Mandrell on BNA Records. Owen was pleased to record Mandrell's
hit "Years," because the song has always reminded him of his mother.
"My father passed away in 1980, and she never remarried," Owen said. "She
said she never saw anyone as good looking as he was. She had the best and
she didn't want to settle for the rest of her life with second best. It was
such an emotional song for me to do. I know it isn't really about that, but
that's the way it hung on my heart."
Owen begins gently singing the lyric. "'Years of hanging onto dreams already
one, years of wishing you were here. After all this time you think I
wouldn't cry, but I still love you after all these years.'
"It's such a simple song, but those are the best kind. I played the rough
for my wife Kelly and she said, 'Wow, let's get out and dance here on the
dirt road.' We were riding around on one of these old dirt roads and she
said, 'You know if there was ever a man who made love to a microphone, you
do.' That's a compliment coming from her because she's heard every demo,
every song, everything I've done for a long time."
Next on Owen's agenda is Songs of Inspiration , a gospel album with his
Alabama pals that was released on Oct. 24. Relating compelling stories
through music is something Alabama has always done, and it's a talent that
provided a vehicle for Cook, Gentry, Herndon and Owen to enter the Country
Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Owen recalls manager Dale Morris calling him to
give him the news. He said he immediately teared up. Once home in Alabama,
he got the rest of the guys together for breakfast and surprised them by
saying he'd always wanted to have breakfast with the newest members of the
Country Music Hall of Fame.
"Nobody said anything at first and then there were some words I can't
print," he recalled with a laugh. "Everyone was genuinely surprised. I'll
always be so grateful. It's a big deal for me that we get to share that
while we are alive and not walking around on canes."
The music on Livin' Lovin' Rockin' Rollin' showcases the musical ride that
landed Alabama in the Hall of Fame. Owen is hoping the fans will enjoy the
collection.
"Hopefully it will mean a lot to the people who are like family to us,
people who have been fans for all these years," he said. "I feel they are a
part of the history of this wonderful success story."

Nashville, TN.. He’ve lived in Tennessee all his life, which is kind of rare
for being a country artist. Most people move to Nashville, and he just kind
of drive to it; it’s about thirty minutes away from home. He got into
country music because of his grandfather. He got him listening to Marty
Robbins, Lefty Frizzell, Hank Williams and people like that. It spurred him
on to start listening to country music and create his own little niche for
myself.

- to be released July 4th
- LOS ANGELES, CA -- MONDAY, May 1, 2006 -- In
the months leading up to his passing on September 12, 2003, JOHNNY CASH had
been recording new material with producer Rick Rubin. On July 4, 2006,
"American V: A Hundred Highways," the all-new Johnny Cash album taken from
those sessions, will be released on the American Recordings label through
Lost Highway. It will include the last song Cash ever wrote.
The songs that comprise "American V: A Hundred Highways" are as eclectic an
assortment as any on the previous albums in the American series: "Help Me,"
a poignant plea to God, the hauntingly beautiful ballad "If You Could Read
My Mind," "God's Gonna Cut You Down," a traditional spiritual, the touching
"Love's Been Good To Me," the heartrending "On The Evening Train," and
"Further On (Up the Road)" are among the tracks on the new album.
Songwriters for the tracks run the gamut from Hank Williams to Rod McKuen to
Bruce Springsteen.
In addition, two original Cash compositions are featured, "Like the 309" and
"I Came to Believe." "Like the 309" is the last song Cash wrote and, like
his first recorded single, 1955's "Hey Porter," is a song that incorporates
one of his favorite settings, trains: "Everybody take a look/See I'm doin'
fine/Then load my box/On the 309." "I Came to Believe" is a song he wrote
and originally recorded earlier in his career, and addresses the pain of
addiction and connecting to a higher power.
"I think that 'American V' may be my favorite of all of the albums in the
American series," said Rubin. "It's different from the others, it has a
much different character. I think that this is as strong an album as Johnny
ever made."
The months following the May, 2004 passing of his wife June Carter Cash,
were among the most physically and emotionally painful times in Cash's life,
but keeping focused on the recording of "American V: A Hundred Highways"
proved to be his salvation. Rubin remembers, "Johnny said that recording
was his main reason for being alive, and I think it was the only thing that
kept him going, the only thing he had to look forward to."
Cash and Rubin began recording the songs that would find their way onto
"American V: A Hundred Highways" in 2002, specifically on the day after
they finished "American IV: The Man Comes Around" which was released that
November. Johnny feared that "American IV" might be his last release, so
Rubin suggested that he immediately begin writing and recording new
material. Over the next eight months, songs were cut at Rubin's Los Angeles
studio and in Nashville at Johnny's main home and at his fabled cabin
located across the road. Due to Cash's frail health, Rubin arranged for an
engineer and guitar players to always be on call for the days that Cash felt
strong enough to work.
"He always wanted to work," said Rubin. "Every morning when he'd wake up,
he would call the engineer and tell him if he was physically up to working
that day. Our main concern was to get a great vocal performance. Johnny
would record a song, send it to me and I would build a new track up under
it. In the past, at the end of this process, he'd come to L.A. And we'd go
through everything together, he would re-record any vocal bits that needed
re-recording. But this time, we didn't have that opportunity."
Last year, Rubin began going through these final recordings. He admitted,
"I kind of dreaded doing it, after Johnny passed, going back and listening
to it...it was difficult.
"With all of the albums Johnny and I made together, our goal was for each
one to be the best it could possibly be, and that remained the case with
'American V,'" Rick explained. Eventually, Cash's long-time engineer David
"Fergie" Ferguson, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell (guitars) and Benmont Tench
(keyboards), and Smokey Hormel (guitars), all of whom had worked on previous
albums in the American series, along with Matt Sweeney (guitars) and Johnny
Polonsky (guitars) went into the studio.
"We felt Johnny's presence during the whole process through to the end,"
said Rubin. "It felt like he was directing the proceedings, and I know that
the musicians all felt that as well. Almost all of the songs were cut
solely to Johnny's original vocal tracks, the musicians all keyed off his
voice and were playing to him, supporting the emotion of his performance.
More than once, Fergie and I would look at each other and say 'Johnny would
love this,' because it was so good and so different from anything we'd done
before, we knew he would be excited by what was happening."
It was decided to wait to release "American V: A Hundred Highways" until
the recent Cash hubbub had run its course. What separates this album from
the re-packages, compilations, movie soundtracks and everything else that
has surfaced since Johnny's passing is, according to Rubin, "These songs are
Johnny's final statement. They are the truest reflection of the music that
was central to his life at the time. This is the music that Johnny wanted
us to hear."

Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The two-disc project

collection will feature all 21 #1 U.S. hits and their flip sides

while the discs will be pressed on black plastic with grooves to
mimic the vinyl 45 rpm singles. Elvis recorded "Heartbreak Hotel"
on January 10th & 11th in 1956 and RCA released it as his first
single for the label a few week's later. The single stayed at #1
for eight weeks on Billboard's Best Sellers In Stores chart, the
precursor to the Hot 100. On January 10, 2006, a CD version with
artwork emulating an April 1956 Presley EP and the single's
original generic RCA paper sleeve will be released.

Music legends Fats Domino and Irma Thomas were
among the missing in the early days of the New Orleans tragedy. Both have
now been found alive and in good shape. Some of Domino's relatives
(including his daughter) recognized him from a photo taken while he was
being transferred from a boat to the Superdome. Thomas apparently left The
Crescent City during the early warning period and was located at the home of
her aunt in Baton Rouge.

According to news reports,
Mickey Gilley attempted to convince Fats
Domino to leave his New Orleans home, but Fats wouldn't go. Gilley spoke
with Domino for a few minutes on the phone, but Domino said he didn't want
to leave, because of concerns for his wife. Fats was later rescued from his
home and helicoptered to a safe place.

Haggard’s next album,“Chicago Wind,” is set for Oct. 25th release on
Capitol Nashville. It includes an updated version of Haggard's 1973 song,
"White Man Singing the Blues," and new originals plus other songs written by
Roger Miller and Willie Nelson.

Looks like Willie Nelson's long awaited reggae album is about
to hit the market. Willie recorded the bulk of it nearly a decade
ago, but it stayed on the shelf due to record label shuffling. Now
polished up, packaged and ready, "Countryman" is set for a July

covers of Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come" and Johnny and June
Carter Cash's "I'm A Worried Man."

Dwight Yoakam returns with new album, movies
By JOHN GEROME
You've got to hand it to Dwight Yoakam. Over his 20-year career
he's borrowed from rock, blues, bluegrass, rockabilly and even punk to keep
his country songs interesting.
But the tune "I'll Pretend" from his new album "Blame the Vain" seems
contorted even for him.
"It's me interpreting the Beatles interpreting country music," said the
48-year-old singer and actor from his Los Angeles home.
Yoakam wrote all 12 songs on the album, a collection of lonesome ballads and
raw rockers that some critics are calling his most inspired work in a while.
The record, which comes out Tuesday, marks a couple of firsts for him. He
produced it himself, and he recorded it without longtime guitarist/producer
Pete Anderson after the two split on less than amicable terms.
Yoakam won't discuss his falling out with Anderson except to say, "We made a
lot of great records together, and I'm very proud of the work we did."
As for self-producing, he said, "The largest and most critical difference
would be that I almost entirely let the music lead me."
And it led him to some unusual places. On "Intentional Heartache," a rocker
with loud, jangly guitars, he breaks into a redneck rant at Connie, his
soon-to-be ex-wife who's trashing his boots with a can of spray paint and
dancing on his Dale Earnhardt Jr. poster. He slips in a playful time change
on "Watch Out," then feigns a quirky British accent on "She'll Remember."
"There's a simplistic, reckless joy to this album," Yoakam said. "There's
probably more of me on this album than on previous albums."
Since his 1986 debut, Yoakam has sold 23 million albums with a sound rooted
in the twangy Bakersfield, Calif., country of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard.
He even teamed with Owens on a remake of Owens' hit "Streets of
Bakersfield."
Along with Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle and Nanci Griffith, Yoakam was part of a
wave of alternative artists who cracked the charts in the 1980s. But unlike
his contemporaries, he became a consistent hitmaker well into the 1990s with
a style that was traditional yet edgy. His hits include "Guitars, Cadillacs,"
"Little Sister," "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere" and "Fast as You."
"I'm grateful to still be able to make a living playing music. It's
something I did for free until I was fortunate enough to have a record
deal," he said.
Yoakam also has a long-standing interest in acting. He won the lead in a
1978 adaptation of "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" staged at the Long Beach
Playhouse in California. In 1994 he made his film debut with Nicholas Cage
and Dennis Hopper in "Red Rock West," and he's continued with roles in "Slingblade,"
"The Newton Boys," "Panic Room" and others.
This year he's in three movies: "Bandidas" with Penelope Cruz and Salma
Hayek, "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada" with Tommy Lee Jones and a
cameo in "The Wedding Crashers" with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughan.
While he enjoys making movies, Yoakam says it's a creative outlet that
depends on many other people - unlike music.
"I don't need involvement by anyone else to do my music. I can pick up my
guitar and sing alone in a room," he said.

“Why Baby Why” George Jones’
“Why Baby Why” is a track in George Jones’ "50 Years Of Hits," which is
set for release on November 9th. Beginning with "Why Baby Why" from 1955 and
running all the way through a 2004 version of "Amazing Grace," the
three-disc set will feature one song for each of those 50 years. In addition
to such classics as "I Always Get Lucky With You," "The Grand Tour" and "He
Stopped Loving Her Today," it also features a number of duets he’s recorded
over the years, with Garth Brooks, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson, Waylon
Jennings, Melba Montgomery, Randy Travis and Tammy Wynette.

Brad Paisley was honored at the Ryman
Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, for selling 5-million albums with his
first three releases. One of the mementos he was given was a guitar from the
private collection of the late Chet Atkins.
STORY BEHIND THE SONG
According to Audrey Williams, Hank started writing his 1952 number
one hit, “Jambalaya,” while the two of them were vacationing in New Orleans,
Louisiana.
Audrey commented, “We were down there just sort of fooling around and Hank
started writing that song. I think he got the idea for the song from the
Creole dishes like Jambalaya that we ate while we were there. Jambalaya was
a native Cajun dish made of seafood or meat stewed with tomatoes. Hank would
usually finish a song once he started working on it but he didn’t finish
“Jambalaya” right away. He carried it around with him for quite a while and
he would work on it now and then. It took him some time to finish it.
Sometime later, we were on tour in Florida and one of Hank’s friends who
owned a restaurant there, told Hank that he was going to cook him a
Jambalaya because of that song. I think “Jambalaya” was one of Hank’s
favorite songs.”
“Jambalaya” entered the country music charts August 16th, 1952 and made it
to number one where it stuck for 14 weeks.
It was Hanks’ 309th chart single and was on the country charts for 29 weeks.
The record also scored a # 20 on the pop music charts.

The Country Music Hall of Fame will release
Country's 20 Classic Gospel Songs of the Century on New Haven Records on May

Willie’s new "Nacogdoches" project is a
limited-release CD collection of jazz instrumentals that he recorded five
years ago. According to Willie, the idea for the CD came from his good
friend and mandolin player Paul Buskirk. And Willie says, "This is a labor

Alabama has released "Alabama: The American
Farewell Tour"
A Nashville, Tennessee court has ruled that ownership of some 150 Hank
Williams recordings-including some 40 songs never commercially released--
belong to Hank Williams Jr. and Jett Williams. The unreleased recordings
were included in "Mother's Best Flour Show," which were recorded in
connection with the radio show of the same name that aired on WSM Radio in
the 1950's.

- The soundtrack to "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," the highest
grossing Coen Brothers movie ever, has been certified platinum by the RIAA
for sales of over 1,000,000 copies. The Mercury Nashville/Lost Highway CD
was released on December 5, 2000 and has been the Number One selling
release on Billboard's "Country Album" chart for the past seven
weeks. It also is the Number One selling soundtrack and is 14 on the
"The Billboard 200" chart.
- The music plays a pivotal role in the plot of the film and was personally
selected by Joel and Ethan Coen and T Bone Burnett. Burnett served as
musical producer for both the film and soundtrack. The Coens and Burnett
did substantial research into music of the 1930s (the era in which the
film is set) and came to Nashville in the spring of '99 to listen to
various musicians and cast them for the film. For "O Brother, Where
Art Thou?," music was central to the plot, and in an unusual move in
movie making, was recorded prior to filming.
- "O Brother" has garnered a tremendous amount of praise from the
media, with raves from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Entertainment Weekly, People,

- Times, the Los Angeles Times among others. Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss,

- In addition to the successful album Mercury and the Coens staged a sold
out live concert in Nashville last May featuring music from the film that
was captured by famed music documentarian D.A. Pennebaker and his partner
Chris Hedgedus. The documentary of the concert, "Down From The
Mountain," recently screened at the South By Southwest Film Festival
and will also be included in the Nashville Independent Film Festival in
June.
